Some of you may wonder why you’d ever need to put a car into self storage. Let’s answer that question with some role-playing:
- Congratulations! You just got a job in the BIG CITY. Thanks to ubiquitous public transportation and the soaring cost of private parking, you won’t need a car anymore.
- Here are your papers — you ship out to Parris Island next month. Your country salutes you.
- That’s a beautiful (insert name of fancy sports car) — I hope you don’t plan on taking that out in the snow and salt this winter.
Some other car storage questions that may be on your mind:
1.) Is a vehicle storage unit different than a regular storage unit?
If you go with an outdoor storage option, then yes, it will be dramatically different than a standard storage unit. The lack of walls will be a dead giveaway (some Uncle Bob’s Self Storage spaces do offer covered outdoor storage — check your local storage facilities). However, if you choose to rent an indoor self storage unit, you can use either of our typical 10′ x 15′ or 10′ x 20′ options.
2.) I don’t want my car to bake or freeze! Is there any sort of heating or cooling in an indoor self storage unit?
Yes, Uncle Bob’s does offer climate controlled storage. Again, you’ll have to check your local facility to determine its specific offerings, but this should be doable.
3.) Is self storage for my car expensive?
Well, that’s going to depend on what you consider expensive, but our opinion is no, it’s not prohibitively expensive. Assuming your car is neither a.) so big that it’s going to require one of our largest storage units or b.) so fuel-efficient that a full tank lasts you four weeks, the cost of storing your vehicle will be roughly the same as a month’s worth of gas.
4.) Should I do anything special to my car before putting it into the storage unit?
There are a few things you should definitely do: ensure you have fresh fluids (oil, gas, antifreeze, power steering fluid, etc.), remove the battery, hoist your tires off the ground with jacks or blocks to prevent flat spots, and so on. For a full list of to-dos, check out our post on how to store a car.
5.) How safe will my vehicle be while I am away?
Keep in mind that you are responsible for the contents of your self storage unit, and you will need to lock it up tight to be certain that you will be the only person with access. You can rest assured, though, that Uncle Bob’s Self Storage facilities are well-lit and well-maintained. We take the security of our customers’ property very seriously.
