Keep Your Sanity With These Organizing Tips

If you feel distracted or unable to relax, these are classic signs of stress.  One thing that’s been proven to cause stress is clutter around your home.

“Clutter bombards our minds with excessive stimuli (visual, olfactory, tactile), causing our senses to work overtime on stimuli that aren’t necessary or important,” said Psychologist Sherrie Bourg Carter in her article Why Mess Causes Stress.

This type of ongoing stress can even have negative effects on your immune system, heart, lungs and other key physiological functions.  However, the heaviest toll is psychological.

“When you are surrounded by more things than you can manage, it sends a visual message that your life is out of control,” the Mayo Clinic reported.

So it’s actually to your benefit physically and mentally to declutter your home.  Yes it’s daunting, but there are measures you can take to take the stress out of organizing your home.

Home organizing experts often promote the “three pile” system to start off.  Designate your items for keeping, trashing or donation.  Stick to this system and be honest with yourself.  If an item has been sitting in your closet for a year, you probably don’t need it.

Declutter expert Melissa Michaels of The Inspired Room and The Decluttered Home recommends not overextending yourself and starting with manageable projects.

It helps to start with one area of the house, preferably a small space that can be completed in a short amount of time,” she says.  “Starting with a simple project and seeing it through to completion will give you the motivation you need to tackle the next space on the list.”

Also, she notes that it’s important to account for your busy schedule.  Section off 30 minutes of your day and designate it as “declutter time.”  If you have children, get them involved so they understand the importance of keeping it up.

Once you’ve figured out which items are going where, you will most likely have plenty to move, especially if you decide to move them into storage.

If you don’t have the right vehicle to move these items, consider renting a moving truck. Most moving truck rental businesses also offer moving supplies such as boxes, packing tape, rope, etc.  We at Uncle Bob’s offer free moving truck rentals with the rental of a storage space. We have more than 400 locations, including new storage facilities in Chicago. So if you need a moving truck, we’re there for you.

These are just a few ways to start organizing your home, and therefore your mind and life.
