The first step of fridge and freezer organization is to perform a basic inventory. Remove everything from the fridge and throw out anything expired. Before placing usable items back in the fridge, clean the fridge shelves and walls with warm, soapy water or food-safe cleaning solution. Avoid bathroom cleaning products, laundry deodorizers, and other products not designed for contact with food.
To prevent food from spoiling in the future, store items that spoil easily toward the front, where they can be seen. Fruits and veggies should be stored in the crisper drawer—which is clear for a reason—and dairy products can be stored in the deli drawer. By putting dates on leftovers, there will be no excuse for keeping food past its expiration date.
Though cleaning and organizing a fridge may seem like a Herculean task, it doesn’t have to be if it’s performed often.
