Instead of dreading laundry, brighten and organize your boring laundry room with these tips.

Let’s face it; most of us dread doing the laundry, am I right? Whether it’s because of the time it takes, the interruption of your day, or you just don’t enjoy the mundane task of sorting, washing, folding, and ironing… you’re not alone! For many homeowners the issue isn’t so much the act of doing the laundry, but rather their laundry room is small, cramped, or just uninviting to be productive in. So the alternative is to lug the laundry to an adjacent living room or bedroom, and fold the clothes all over the place. Instead of dreading this chore, why not brighten your dull laundry room and try some organization tips to make it more inviting. If you have to do the laundry, you might as well enjoy the space you’re in!

Get rid of the old and bring light into your laundry room.

Depending on where your laundry room is positioned in your home, assess how you can perk up the walls, flooring, and if you have a window, the window treatments or blinds. For many of us, we assume that the laundry room only has a utilitarian function; therefore we forget it should be a welcoming room that we don’t mind spending time in. If you don’t have a window to bring in natural light to your laundry room, look to paint and/or wall murals to add color. Light and fresh colors such as mint green, butter yellow, or sky blue tend to perk up a room and will make your laundry room feel more livable (even though we don’t want to live in it, we often feel like we do…). If your flooring is old, consider replacing it with a resilient ceramic tile for durability. If you’re on a tight budget you’d be surprised what a colorful high traffic area rug will do to bring color into your laundry room.

Organization is key in a functional laundry room.

If you’re like most homeowners you probably try to do 20 different tasks in your laundry room, and it isn’t possible without good organization. Think of your family lifestyle and how your family stores and sorts soiled laundry, and then what the process is of who cleans it and where the clean clothes go once they are ready to be folded. If your laundry room is large enough, include an area for soiled clothes for each person.

With a smaller laundry room, it may be more practical to keep a hamper in each person’s room. If you have a front-loading washer and dryer, try adding a countertop surface above the machines for added space. This will give a folding and staging area to pre-treat stains, sort through pockets and more. If there is space between or on the sides of your machines, look to rolling carts on casters to hold laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and household cleaners.

Vertical wall storage can save the day in any laundry room.

One of the most overlooked areas in laundry rooms is vertical wall storage. When space is limited, organization is best utilized when every square inch is being considered. Look to wall shelving – both open wood shelves and wire racks can be installed easily. Consider different length options depending on how you will use your laundry room space. An area for hanging wet clothes or freshly ironed shirts could be hung from taller shelves than where laundry essentials are kept. If you prefer to keep your items behind closed doors, upper cabinetry can be installed. If your laundry room doubles as the utility room for brooms, mops, and coats for the family, try adding hooks as well as wall organizers for cleaning supplies. Your favorite organization store has plenty of wall options to hold these supplies up and out of the way. You may find hidden storage you have never thought about – like hanging your ironing board on the back of the laundry room door with an ironing board hook that installs over the top of the door.
